Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday extended support to the proposed Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, which seeks the removal of Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers, and ministers facing serious criminal charges.

Adhikari said the bill reflects the will of the people and stressed that the Constitution exists to serve citizens, not political parties.

“This bill should be implemented. The public wants it, and whatever the people want will happen. The Constitution is not ‘for the party, by the party, of the party’; it is ‘for the people, of the people, by the people’. Ministers from corrupt parties are going to jail, and the same will happen in the future. All the corrupt have united to stop this bill,” he told ANI.

The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, proposes that any Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or Minister detained for 30 consecutive days on charges carrying a minimum sentence of five years will automatically lose their office after 31 days if they do not resign. However, the bill also permits re-appointment upon release.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) strongly opposed the move, alleging that it is a tool designed by the Modi government to target opposition leaders, destabilise elected governments, and engage in political horse-trading.

“This law has nothing to do with fighting corruption. It is meant to crush opposition parties and topple governments through false cases,” AAP MP Sanjay Singh said in a statement.
